MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE?

In recent times the public has become more discerning about the quality of tap water. Environmentally, tap water is the best solution as it uses natural sources and does not place any extra strain on the environment through manufacturing and the use of plastic bottles. While tap water is usually deemed ‘drinkable’, there are often taste issues in areas of high chlorination or where sediment or grit might be present. These concerns have led to the development of an established industry, geared to providing and replenishing a supply of cooled, good quality water to the workplace through mains fed point of use (POU) and bottled drinking water dispensers.


ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS


AND SUSTAINABILITY It is only in more recent times that we have begun to count the environmental cost of producing and filling large plastic bottles and transporting them around the country in trucks for workplace consumption. It transpired that the environmental cost was unacceptably high. The issues of biological and chemical activity in static vessels containing essentially stagnant water, for intervals of days or more, also came under scrutiny, posing a huge purity, and moreover, health and safety issue.


FORTUNATELY, TECHNOLOGY

workplace destinations. Prior to the introduction of water dispensers, organisations began to wonder if it would be possible to deliver pure water, while removing the environmentally extravagant links in the delivery chain. It would mean addressing the production, disposal and destruction of large quantities of large plastic bottles, used machines and diesel emissions, amongst others.


Independent research led to the conclusion that over a five year period, mains-fed, POU, water coolers could reduce a sites carbon footprint by between 55% and 72%, dependent on the volume of usage. It was found that, if this could be coupled with energy-efficient recycling of the coolers themselves at the end of their useful life, the impact would be even greater.


POU dispensers filter sediment and reduce bacteria, however, they are not all the same and in some cases they could adversely affect water quality and purity. Specialist solutions which offer unrivalled purification, filtration and hygiene technologies offer the best quality water.
