RAIL SURVEYING

On Time T

opcon understands that saving money through saving time is important in today’s

world. It was this issue that Tube Lines had when they initially approached Topcon to offer them a unique solution for fault reporting on their tracks. They were using traditional paper methods to record faults on track, which inevitably gave rise to repetition of faults and/ or the inability to relocate them. As a result, this was costing valuable man hours, which, with a short window of around five hours each night for working, due to strict track possession times, significantly increased costs.

Topcon was able to offer a solution for positioning the faults on the surface ground sections of track (~75%) of the Piccadilly, Northern and Jubilee lines using our GRS- 1 Handheld GNSS Receiver. When used in combination with our TopNET+ DGNSS Network Correction Service this provides a real-time sub metre position. Along with on- board eGIS data collection software running on the GRS-1, Topcon could also offer the ability to

report faults directly into their ‘back office’ GIS Maximo system.

This required a number of customisations within the eGIS software, as Maximo required a specialised chainage and offset measurement

Simon Crowhen, rail and geomatics product manager at Topcon, discusses the principles behind ‘Topcon On Time’ and how it is helping Tube Lines with accurate fault reporting.

relative to track centreline to generate a position rather than the more common Easting and Northing co-ordinate value. Within eGIS there is the ability to use the GNSS position of the GRS-1 to ‘snap’ to the closest track centreline and acquire the LCS (unique track) Code. Using this LCS Code with a calculated chainage and offset measurement from the centreline, it was then possible to provide an accurate sub metre position as a single point feature or a linear feature between two recorded chainage points. This could then be read directly into Maximo.

The predetermined pick list also provided in- depth information to repair gangs regarding materials and time required to complete work via the Standard Fault Number generated. Once again saving time and money – the Topcon way.
