£106m fleet maintenance contract extension for Bombardier

Bombardier has been awarded a £106m fleet maintenance contract with Virgin

Trains to continue

maintaining its Super Voyager fleet, which operates on the West Coast Main Line.

The deal extends the existing

agreement to March 2016, with train maintenance continuing at Central Rivers Depot in Burton- on-Trent, Staffordshire, where 360 people are employed, and at other outstations across the network.

Tony Collins, chief executive of Virgin Trains said: “Virgin Trains are delighted to extend our service agreement with Bombardier Transportation, building on the strong relationship we have developed over the last 13 years.

“The Voyagers are a key part of the West Coast Fleet and we look forward to working with Bombardier to continue to deliver a reliable and punctual service to all of our customers.”

Paul Roberts, chief country representative of Bombardier Transportation, UK, said: “Winning this contract allows us to continue our strong relationship with Virgin, which has been in place since 1998.

“It demonstrates Virgin’s trust in Bombardier to continue delivering an excellent and cost-effective service.”

Major GEML line upgrade could generate £2.5bn benefits

Local authorities and business groups in East Anglia, supported by the main train operator in the region, Greater Anglia, have released a major study making the case for investment on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML).

The study, carried out by Atkins and commissioned by Norfolk, Suffolk

and Essex Councils and supported

County by

Greater Anglia and the New Anglia and South East Local Enterprise Partnerships, highlights the opportunities available for investment on the line.

These include remodelling Bow Junction near Stratford, provision of a new three tracked section at Boreham, raising the line speeds between London Liverpool Street

and Norwich to a maximum of 125mph with associated infrastructure improvements and refurbishing or replacing intercity rolling stock and commuter rolling stock on Norwich – London services.

The group is asking Network Rail to review and validate the study, which suggests that a major upgrade of the line could generate £2.5bn of economic benefits.

£30m TfL funding for Crossrail public realm regeneration scheme

Crossrail has secured £30m funding from TfL for its public realm scheme to support regeneration at locations along the route.

The plans will see station design integrated with new and improved public spaces, to be jointly delivered by local authorities and developers. The cost of the public realm scheme is around £90m, £28m already secured through the Crossrail budget and a further £30m contribution from TfL.

The work includes 92,000 square metres of improved public space to be created outside stations; transport interchange improvements, including

East Midlands Trains launches new timetable

3,675 seats have been added to East Midlands Trains’ Nottingham to Liverpool services.

Under the operator’s new timetable, launched in mid-December, Sunday afternoon journey times to London have been improved by up to 20 minutes on some journeys.

Some weekday services to Grimsby will call at Hykeham as a result of the new Siemens factory opening in North Lincolnshire.

David Horne, managing director for East Midlands Trains, said: “Every year, we review the timetable and listen to feedback from passengers, staff and stakeholders on how we can make further improvements.

“This year, we’re pleased to be completing the next phase of our work to provide extra capacity on the busy Nottingham to Liverpool route and provide some additional services on our local routes.”

The scheme will be delivered ahead of Crossrail services starting

in 2018, to allow

engagement with local authorities and developers. Initial urban realm design work has been completed at 16 stations so far, with plans for another 12 to be completed at the end of 2013.
