21ST CENTURY TEACHING

Instant Messaging Instant messaging allows students to communicate in real time using the computer or mobile devices such as a cell phone. Students can communicate with classmates regarding class projects by sending images, video, audio, and text files to students at other computer stations. Free tools are provided by both Google and Yahoo.

How Can Instant Messaging Improve Learning and Assessment? Instant messaging in the classroom allows students to communicate and work in real time on course topics with classmate and with experts in the field of study.

Student Response Systems Student Response Systems are small enough to fit in the palm of a student’s hand and can be assigned to a student for a semester to collect data on overall understanding of specific content. Questions are posed in the classroom, and students answer through the student response system by ‘clicking’ what they believe is the correct response. Their response is immediately recorded in a computer database and summary information of the class responses is available immediately, so the instructor can determine level of understanding.

How Can Student Response Systems Improve Learning and Assessment? Student response systems or “clickers” provide quick access to students’ understanding of course topics. Teachers can stop a presentation and take a quick check on what students are learning. Students’ responses are recorded and the teacher can display a graph of students’ answers, which can be a powerful tool to encourage student growth. Real-time data reveals whether students understand the material being presented, and teachers can adjust their lessons accordingly.
