IN PRACTICE

The topic of grading as it relates to assessment is a topic to be explored more thoroughly at a different time and in a different article; however, there is a key point worth making at this time. Teachers must give thought as to how they will assess student progress on practice assignments in the way that best leads to a final grade that represents mastery. The third AFL example in this article is a good example of a way to do just that. The following video illustrates the danger of allowing practice assessments to overly impact the final grade.

THE UNIT RUBRIC At the beginning of a unit of study, the students are given a rubric that includes all of the important terms, people, vocabulary, and concepts that they will need to know. At the end of each class period, the students are given a few minutes to go over their rubric and rate how well they understand or have mastered the items on it. The teacher then gives them a chance each day to ask questions based on their rubrics. After doing this throughout the unit of study, the students will have created their own personal study guide. On the night before the test the students will study the parts of their rubric on which they had rated themselves the weakest.
