Wisconsin adopts latest edition of NFPA 1, Fire Code


MADISon, WIS.— Effective January 1, 2011, The State of Wisconsin adopted the most recent edition of the national Fire Protection’s (nFPA) nFPA 1, Fire code. “Today, perhaps more than ever, it is essential to pro-


vide the latest tools and training to the firefighters and building professionals charged with protecting people from fire,” said Joe Hertel, program manager of the Safety and Buildings Division, Department of commerce. “This code adoption will help to ensure that the people and buildings of Wisconsin are getting the best protection possible.” recognized worldwide and adopted statewide in 18


states, nFPA 1 provides requirements necessary to establish a reasonable level of fire safety and property protection from hazards created by fire and explosion. Its primary pur- poses are to address basic fire prevention requirements and to reference or extract the fire prevention and protection aspects of many other nFPA codes and standards. Wisconsin has participated in training and is scheduled


for additional future trainings through programs devel- oped by nFPA and offered to states that have adopted nFPA 1 and other key nFPA codes and standards. Instruction provided by nFPA technical experts covers the codes’ requirements and the numerous ways they can be utilized and enforced. This training is free to government code enforcement officials.


IAPMO Standards Council issues TIAs


onTArIo, cAlIF. — on Jan. 7, the IAPMo Standards council issued Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) affecting the 2006, 2009 and 2012 editions of the uniform Plumbing code (uPc) and the uniform Mechanical code (uMc). TIAs uPc-009-09 and uPc-033-06 replace code lan-


guage related to the purging of gas in Section 1214.6 of the 2009 and 2006 uPc, respectively. The council simi- larly voted favorably to approve TIAs uMc-006-09 and uMc-022-06, replacing code language related to the purging of gas in Section 1316.6 of the 2009 uMc and Section 1314.7 of the 2006 uMc, respectively.

These TIAs address the hazards involved in the com-


mon industry practice of indoor gas purging at industri- al, commercial and public facilities by requiring the dis- charge of purged gases to be directed outdoors and identify specific requirements that must be met during the purging process. Specific requirements include the following: 1. The point of discharge shall be controlled with a


shutoff valve. 2. The discharge point shall be not less than 10 feet


from sources of ignition, located not less than 10 feet from building openings and not less than 25 feet from mechanical air intake openings. 3. During discharge, the open discharge point shall be


attended and monitored with a combustible gas indicator. 4. Purging operations introducing fuel gas shall be


stopped when 90 percent fuel gas by volume is detected within the pipe at the point of discharge. 5. All persons not involved in the purging operations


shall be evacuated from the area within 10 feet of the point of discharge.


Top ten trends for 2011 green building


TucSon, ArIz. — citing 10 major trends, green building and sustainability consultant Jerry Yudelson says that the green building industry will rebound in 2011 in spite of the continuing economic difficulties in most developed countries. Speaking about his annual Top Ten list, the green


building expert and author said, “What we’re seeing is that more people are going green each year, and there is nothing on the horizon that will stop this trend. In 2010, however, the slowdown in commercial real estate put a crimp in the startup rate for new green building projects.” The worldwide green building movement will contin-
