WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN LED FIXTURE
> Use of high-quality LEDs from manufacturers who publish reliability data.

> Luminaire warranty offered by the manufacturer-should be at least comparable to traditional luminaires used for the application under consideration.

> Luminaire photometric report, based on LM-79-08 test procedure, from an independent testing laboratory.

> Temperature data (for example, board, case, or solder joint temperature) for the LEDs when operated in the luminaire in the intended application; and information about how the measured temperature relates to expected life of the system.

> Any test data available about longer term performance of the LED luminaire, such as DOE CALiPER testing, manufacturer in-house testing, or field tests conducted by DOE, utilities, or other parties.

ENLUX LED LIGHTING
The R-30F Par 30 LED lamp operates on just 14W yet replaces a 75W incandescent bulb, or a 26W compact fluorescent. It has a useful light output of about 600 lumens, a 50,000 hour rated life, and is available in warm, neutral, or cool colors. It works with most residential dimmers. Note that if the lamp is used in a 5” or 6” recess can, you must specify a less powerful, 10W lamp to avoid overheating. www.enluxled.com

GREENWAY PATH LIGHTING
Ideal for walkways and trails in small community developments, the GreenWay solar LED lighting system from Sol is a turnkey package. Each kit includes a 20’ light pole and PV panel with a 100 amp hour battery backup. The battery pack and PV panel are mounted close to the top of the pole, away from vandals. Available in sizes from 50W to 125W, all components are made for durability-from the Grade A aluminum pole to the Gel Cel battery to the polycarbonate lens that protects the Ascot Luminaire (LED lamp). www.solarlightingusa.com

FLUORESCENT BALLAST CONVERTER
This small company, based in Phoenix, caught our eye at GreenBuild. They sell a compact retrofit system called Save It Easy that converts old 4’ fluorescent lamp ballasts into high frequency fluorescent lighting ballasts ready for newer, more efficient T5 tubes. These plug and play units also allow for shorter tubes giving an additional energy savings. Total energy saved per lamp can reach about 50%. Units come with a full two-year warranty. www.ezideasolution.com

LUTRON ECOHOME
Lutron has taken a holistic approach to energy conservation. Instead of a single product, they’ve designed a whole suite of new dimmers and sensors that offer homeowners (and landlords) various levels of control over how and when lighting is used. For a more detailed overview of this multi-modal approach, see the “Dimmers with an Attitude,” page 51. www.lutron.com
