ON THE ROAD in San Diego
There may not be a better destination for multisport athletes than San Diego, the birthplace of triathlon. With its mild, sunny weather and miles of coastline, your options for staying active are unlimited here in the Golden State. There’s also no shortage of multisport events here, including the 2011 USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championships in August.


BEST PLACES TO SWIM/BIKE/RUN
If you want to practice open-water swimming, head out to La Jolla Cove and take a dip in the ocean. For the days when you’re better suited for a pool swim, check out the UC San Diego Masters or the Solana Beach Boys & Girls Club. You might even run into some pros! … Torrey Pines State Park and Mission Trails Park are both ideal destinations to take your run off-road or to go for a hike … Hit the coast with the Triathlon Club of San Diego for the club’s famous Saturday morning bike ride. The group ride starts at the Starbucks in Del Mar at 8 a.m. and you have the option of riding 30, 40 or 60-plus miles.


MISSING SOME GEAR?
No matter what part of San Diego you’re in, you can find a gear shop that will suit your needs. New and veteran triathletes alike find themselves at Moment Cycle Sport for tune-ups and quick, friendly service … B&L Bikes offers bike fitting and rentals … Pulse Endurance Sports is a one-stop shop for all things triathlon, including bike gear, running shoes and wetsuits … If you’re looking for fantastic customer service and selection, head over and see the folks at Hi-Tech Bikes … The staff at Nytro are known to give tips to customers and can outfit you with whatever you might need for a day of training or racing.


BEST PLACES FOR TRIATHLETES TO FUEL
To experience the local nightlife in a relaxed setting, check out Beachwood Bar on Mission Boulevard and Reed, which has a great selection of recovery beverages … If you’re looking for an epic burger, check out Bare Back Grill, which was voted the best burger in San Diego four years running … Mitch’s Seafood is a local joint that offers fish sandwiches, seafood tacos and tasty clam chowder.


INTANGIBLES
The San Diego Zoo houses more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals and provides a day of fun for all ages … If you want a break from swim, bike and run but want to stay active, you can embrace the very best of San Diego with a hand-crafted souvenir.
