Steel Institute (Stahlinstitut VDEh) of Düsseldorf, Germany. The second dataset is from the MI-21 ‘Metals Information for the 21st Century’ project, and includes two unique data collections – World Metal Index (WMI) Metals and The Welding Institute (TWI) Welding Consumables. These provide chemical, mechanical, and physical properties for thousands of metals, electrodes, fillers, and fluxes. Granta MI makes it easy to query, browse, and use this data. www.grantadesign.com

BIOINFORMATICS

Software for desktop-based processing of sequencing data DNAStar has announced the release of ArrayStar 4, including QSeq, as an updated microarray and next-generation sequencing technology software suite. The newly released software includes substantial enhancements to the company’s previously released RNA-Seq capabilities and introduces ChIP-Seq data alignment and analysis. ArrayStar 4 and QSeq handle data from all major next-gen sequencing and microarray platforms and perform all alignment and analysis on a desktop computer. According to the company, its software enables desktop-based processing of sequencing data in reasonable timeframes, even as next- generation data volumes continue to grow exponentially, allowing accessible computing for large sample sizes. www.dnastar.com

Windows-based analysis and graphing software updated OriginLab has released Origin 8.5, a new version of its Windows-based analysis and graphing software. The release includes several new features that allow for more sophisticated representations of data, and also provides users with a greater ability to analyse their data directly in graphs.

The new features include transparency control to allow graph elements to overlap while maintaining clarity, and gradient colour fill to increase contrast and visual impact. Zooming and panning can now be done simultaneously on graphs and images, allowing for more

instrument maintenance and calibration: managing routine maintenance schedules, problem resolution, and task allocation. The enhanced release now provides a simplified user interface, role- based access, and numerous new features that streamline maintenance and calibration tasks. An Instrument Maintenance

and Calibration System, IMCS Live is a robust laboratory equipment calibration tracking and management software program that allows labs to schedule periodic maintenance and inspection events automatically, as well as track, monitor and report those events using an extensive array of customisable reports. It provides a central repository for calibration and maintenance records, delivering unmatched flexibility in maintaining, visualising, and reporting instrument history, including instrument type, identification, location, user, as well as problem status and history.

New features include optimised searches, integration with Crystal Reports, a new MTBF feature

efficient inspection of data at multiple scales in both two and three dimensions. Additional graphing improvements include an enhanced waterfall plot, a new vector plot template, and the ability to add error bars to 3D plots. Moreover, the new virtual matrix feature enables surface and contour graphs to be created directly from worksheet data, including those with non-uniform axis scales. Key analysis features have also been added, including a new Fitting Function Builder, a redesigned data information window, and three new gadgets: region statistics, interpolation and differentiation. www.originlab.com

allows the administrator to monitor performance for each piece of equipment, a new view editor preview function allows retired equipment to be filtered out of the equipment list without being permanently removed, and much more. Now, laboratories can be ensured that equipment calibration and maintenance is managed automatically for all equipment – from chromatographs to fire extinguishers – in the lab. Advanced features include

a new Future Tasks function that allows task forecasting so that tasks can be performed in advance when vacation time is scheduled. New Advanced Editing features enable users to change properties for multiple pieces of equipment simultaneously, such as when equipment is retired. In addition, a new Customised Appearance function allows the administrator to add links, views, text, even pictures of the actual equipment to make visual identification easier.

As a web-delivered Software as a Service (SAAS) solution, IMCS Live enables the organisation

to replace large upfront fees and costs with periodic all-in- one subscription payments at a fraction of the price, thus enabling expenditures to be shifted from fixed costs to variable costs and increase the flexibility of cost structures. www.chemsw.com

Interface connector for Nexxis ELN

Labtronics has released a new interface connector between Agilent ChemStation CDS and Labtronics’ Nexxis ELN. This new interface connector links ChemStation CDS and Nexxis ELN transparently, so that information is automatically exchanged between the two systems. Nexxis ELN can collect sample weights and all of the metadata for the sample prep process. The weights can then be sent to ChemStation, allowing it to complete the concentration calculations. Results are then sent back to Nexxis ELN where they are automatically added to the same worksheet used for sample prep. Using this workflow, Nexxis

ELN is able to collect all of the information for an analysis in one place. A single worksheet contains all of the information related to a chromatography analysis, including things such as the batch number of reagents used to prepare the sample, the analyst who prepared the samples, the column ID, the instrument that performed the analysis, a link to the chromatogram, and the final calculated results. With all of the information in one place, the review and approval process is now easy to complete. The interface connector will also automatically store the chromatography report in any SDMS, including Nexxis SDMS, ➤
