return to 2008 throughput levels this year. Savannah, which has grown among major retail distribution centres, admits it has been affected by “high unemployment, housing market weakness and financial sector weakness, all of which led to weak consumer spending”. Low foreign demand for key export commodities added to the gloom. Phase 2 of the Container Berth 8 development was

completed last year. Next year the port will begin a three-year project to deepen Savannah harbour to 48ft (14.6 metres). The port took delivery of 25 new RTG cranes in 2009,

and will receive 12 additional STS gantry cranes and 71 more RTGs between 2010 and 2020. The port has two on-site class 1 railroads and is

The fourth busiest container port in the US saw volumes slump by 260,125teu in 2009, but hopes to

connected to two major interstate highways, putting some 80% of the US population within reach by road or rail. It remains the dominant south Atlantic port for trade with northeast Asia, and claims to be gaining market share on routes to south and southeast Asia. A spokesman tells CS: “We expect that we will continue

to maintain and grow our market share on the East Coast and further draw cargo that otherwise might go via West Coast ports. Georgia Ports Authority continues to remain focused on its long-term strategic development and we are marshalling the necessary resources and efforts now toward that end.”

47 Zeebrugge Throughput: 2,328,198teu

(+5.4%)

The Belgian port bucked the regional trend in 2009 to post 5.4% growth, while larger regional competitors such as Antwerp, Rotterdam and Hamburg saw dramatic declines. Zeebrugge increased throughput by 118,485teu and

climbed eight places in the Top 100 rankings following an increase in transhipment traffic – which now makes up 25% of its business – and a strengthening of services by larger ships. The port authority predicts further growth of some 6%

across all sectors this year, although it acknowledges that global trade remains weak. Zeebrugge welcomed new service calls in 2009,

including Mitsui OSK Line’s Africa service, the Evergreen CEM/China Shipping AEX 1 service and a strengthened South China Express. The port has added to the number of hinterland

services on offer to its customers and has also improved accessibility for larger ships. It welcomed 508 deepsea calls and 1,003 feeder vessels in 2009. The PSA HNN-operated Container Handling Zeebrugge terminal, on the north side of the Albert II

dock, is scheduled to being operations in November 2010 and will be capable of handling ships of up to 15,000teu with four super post-panamax gantries. Annual capacity will be more than 1m teu. Exports accounted for 44% of total throughput while

imports were 31% and transhipment 25%. The port hopes to attract more business through improved levels of service.
