13 Port Klang Throughput: 7,309,779teu

(-8.3%)

Despite volumes falling by 663,800teu in 2009, Port Klang managed to climb two places to position 13 in the Top 100. Transhipment, with a total of 4,315,682teu, remained

the key driving force at the port while imports accounted for 1,515,743teu and exports totalled 1,478,354teu. The port tells CS that the measures taken to fight the

decline included aggressive marketing initiatives by terminal operators and shipping agents in the Mediterranean, Europe and Far East, as well as the local Southeast Asia market. The downturn led Port Klang’s Northport container

terminal to put its new berth development on hold. The M$500m (US$144m) project was slated to add 350 metres of additional quayline. Volumes at Northport fell from 3m teu in 2008 to 2.9m

teu in 2009, while rival Westports saw its throughput decline from 4.9m teu to 4.4m teu year-on-year. The port is optimistic that it will grow by 12% to 8.2m

teu in 2010. It says the key challenge is to match transport sector efficiency and infrastructure development and

interconnectivity among various transport modes with world class facilities. There are signs of recovery for Port Klang with a number

of carriers recently launching or reviving service calls. In Q1 2010, volumes at Northport rebounded by 26%,

compared with the same period in 2009. The terminal’s export volumes rose by 25% to 223,450teu while imports increased by 21% to 231,450teu and transhipment grew by 30% to 324,899teu in the period. Port Klang welcomed 11,080 vessel calls in 2009.
