Mazak defines five levels of multitasking technology M


azak Corp. (Florence, KY) identifies five levels of mul- titasking functionality and


machine technology. Multitasking technology is the foundation for sin- gle setup, complete part machining in “done-in-one” processing from raw material to finished part. Multitasking involves combining several cutting processes, including turning, milling, drilling, tapping and deep-hole boring on one machine rather than having those same processes handled on multiple machines. Mazak’s machine configurations incorporate all the elements needed, including second turning spindles, multiple tool turrets with rotary tool stations, Y-axis off- centerline capability, tilt/rotary B-axis milling spindles, rotary tilt tables, and large capacity tool magazines. Mazak defines five levels of multi-


tasking technology:


First: Single-turning spindle and drum-style turret with rotat- ing tools. Mazak machines include Quick Turn Smart, Slant Turn, in- verted vertical spindle turning, and Super Quadrex. Second: Y-axis functionality for


drum turret machining off centerline and done-in-one processing capabil- ity; two spindles, two turrets, milling turret and two spindles. Machines include Hyper Quadrex, Quick Turn Nexus, Multiplex Third: Independent milling spindle


headstock with B-axis indexing, full Y-axis travels; four-axis simultaneous


machining, five-axis tool tip posi- tioning. Machines include Integrex j series, Variaxis j series Fourth: Emphasis on automation


with robots and Palletech system for untended machining, simultaneous five-axis machining. Machines include


Integrex I series, Integrex e-Horizon- tal, Integrex e-Vertical, Variaxis i Fifth: Ultratasking functions are


added to machine technology, in- cluding gearcutting, honing, grind- ing, and polishing. Machines include Integrex i series, Integrex e-Horizon- tal, Integrex e-Vertical, and Variaxis. Mazak has further extended the


concept of multitasking technology with the introduction of the Hybrid Multi-Tasking additive/subtractive machine technology. It involves direct laser sintering in combination with conventional machining to build features onto existing or new parts and then machine them to size and desired surface finish. At IMTS, Mazak will be cutting a


variety of gears using Integrex mul- titasking machines, as well as skiving for high-volume production, hobbing and other processes.
