ON THE JOB OFFICER SAFETY JUST HANDED DOWN PUBLIC SAFETY IT SOLUTIONS

Offi cer Safety With Every Contact By Jennifer Gavigan

Every interaction be- tween an offi cer and an unknown contact has potential risks. Reduc-

ing those risks—for both the offi cer and the individual—is one of law enforcement’s most critical challenges. Intelli- check’s Law ID™ reduces those risks, especially during traffi c stops. Intellicheck’s Law ID increases

sual contact with that person. LAW and ORDER talked to Intellicheck’s CEO, Dr. William H. Roof, CAPT, USNR (ret) about Law ID and its many benefi ts for law enforcement. Dr. Roof’s background includes work at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) as well as earning a Doctorate in Software Engineer- ing from the United States Naval Postgraduate School. The idea for Law ID came about

an officer’s situational aware- ness by making it possible to quickly scan an unknown contact’s ID while minimizing the offi cer’s loss of vi-

after an incident in the state of Wash- ington, in which a female offi cer was killed during a ‘routine’ traffi c stop for a car with no license plates. The offi cer approached the stopped ve- hicle, asked the driver for license and registration, and the driver complied. The offi cer then walked back to her vehicle to enter the ID information into her MDT and wait for results. At that point, the offi cer was vulnerable: it’s virtually impossible to maintain visual contact while walking and en-

tering data, and the offi cer’s seated position limited her mobility. The driver approached her and shot and killed her before she had time to respond. After reading about that tragic incident, Dr. Roof thought there had to be a way of enhancing offi cer safety by getting immediate threat identifi cation without losing sight of a suspect. Law ID instantly authenticates

the contact’s identifi cation using a smartphone or tablet by scanning

the contact’s ID barcode. Critical data fi elds that indicate the threat level are highlighted in red, yellow and green, and visible at a glance. Having au- thenticated the contact’s identity, the offi cer can act accordingly and quickly assess whether caution is warranted. “It is a great tool to de-escalate poten- tially dangerous situations and save lives,” Dr. Roof said. Each signifi cant encounter requires a time-consuming, detailed incident re- port. Law ID increases accuracy while reducing the time it takes to fi ll out reports by automatically populating standardized forms with information retrieved during the records search. Patented ID verifi cation technology authenticates more than 200 unique DMV ID barcode formats, from every state and Canadian province, as well as State Justice Information Systems and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) databases. and tablets such as iPhones, iPads, Androids, etc.; operating systems and hardware must meet Federal Informa-
