CEO VIEW Continued from page one.

Trustees have five principal functions and must balance their responsibility to establish policies and procedures while allowing the staff to control day- to-day operations.

The five functions of a cooperative board are:

1) Legal: Ensure the legal right of the cooperative to exist

2) Trusteeship: Act in the best interest of the members

3) Planning: Develop programs and carry out plans based on ideas that reflect the thinking of its members, with realistic goals adjusted to the purposes of the cooperative

4) Resources: Assure the availability of basic resources, including personnel, loan funds, wholesale power, and revenue, according to the cooperative’s size and needs

Facility’s progress continues

5) Control: Monitor operations to assure compliance with board policy, budgets, member relations, loan covenants, contractual compliance, and long-range planning

In addition to these functions, trustees have three primary duties: loyalty, obedience and due care. They have certain rights and adhere to a board member code of ethics.

Meetings for three districts are held every year, as announced on page one. This year’s meetings are for districts three, four and nine. If you’re in one of those districts, you will receive a notice in the mail closer to the meeting date.

Above is a photo of the lobby of TCEC’s new facility on May 7. Work continues on the inside although much-needed recent rainfall has delayed progress in some outside areas. Much of the furniture has now been installed and the walls have been finished. n

Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet your district’s trustee and talk to staff members from the cooperative. I can’t stress enough the importance of member involvement in your local electric cooperative. n
