energy in the production process are rapidly becoming the focal point. Tis is happening against the backdrop of gener- ally rising energy prices and also as a consequence of political rules and regulations. In the future, electricity consuming enterprises in many countries will have to share in the cost of higher fees as part of the turnaround of energy policy. Te search for the ideal model for energy savings and cost


reductions is complex because a large number of parameters influence energy efficiency. It is questionable how to com- pare the impact of the type of diecasting machine with the impact of other cost-cutting measures on reducing energy.


Power Consumption During the Standard Cycle For many years now, information about energy consump-


tion has been posted on equipment used in the consumer goods industry in the form of “Energy Labels.” In the meantime, the foundry industry was able to establish key indicators of energy efficiency led by the VDMA, Bühler and other representatives of the industry who joined and described a standardized process in VDMA Standards Sheet 24499, which makes it possible to compare the energy con- sumption of diecasting machines. Consumption is measured and reported based on a process-oriented cycle that shows defined standby times for the functions of the peripheral and/ or additional components of the casting cell. Comparisons of the different types of diecasting machines made by various manufacturers also can also be ensured by defining “waiting periods” as a function of the closing force of the diecasting machine and having the course of the process described with clearly defined process conditions (Fig. 1).
