Technical Reference Rim & Spur Sprocket Troubleshooting Guide
Spur Sprocket Damage
Cause This condition can occur when cutting chain drive links wear through the case-hardened teeth
Result Cutting chain can be ruined by damaged spurs
Solution If spur sprocket teeth look like this replace immediately
Rim Damage
Cause Wear can occur under normal conditions. However, check for excessive rim wear and look for wear on outer diameter
Result The reduction in diameter can also allow chain drive links to damage the sprocket adaptor
Solution Replace rim after two chains
Worn Spur Outer Wear Broken Rim Severe Rim Damage
Solution Do not fit cutting chain to rims that are severely worn. Serious chain damage will result and the rim may break
Chain Brake Stress Skirt Wear/Brake Band Wear/Adaptor Damage Worn Rim and Adaptor Spline
Result An overly tightened strap around the drum will cause the strap to rub against the clutch drum which will overheat and soften the metal causing potential drum failure
Solution If your chain saw has a chain brake, always check the brake to make sure it stops the rotating chain when activated. Make certain that the brake strap around the drum is not too tight
