Coherent Solutions introduces automatic bias controller for IQ-modulators

Coherent Solutions of Auckland, New Zealand, has launched the IQABC, a pattern independent automatic bias controller for IQ modulators used by engineers developing the next generation of high-speed coherent optical systems. The device is modulation format independent, paving the way towards simple generation of any conceivable optical signal, the company claims.

Higher data rates have led engineers to develop more complex, higher bandwidth IQ-modulators than ever before, but such devices are extremely sensitive to bias conditions. The IQABC uses sophisticated algorithms accurately to track and stabilise the DC-bias points of any OIF-compliant IQ modulator. This will ensure that the coherent optical signals will be stable and repeatable, helping engineers to accelerate their product development and testing. ‘The IQABC will relieve optical engineers of the rather frustrating task of modulator bias maintenance for higher-order modulation formats. With its robust, modulation format independent algorithm, it just works.’ said Andy Stevens, CEO of Coherent Solutions. The IQABC is commercially available now and will be demonstrated live at OFC 2016, booth 1328.

Fiber Optic Center offers ÅngströmLap Ultimas-Pro final polishing lapping film

Fiber Optic Center (FOC), an international distributor of fibre-optic components, equipment and supplies, has added ÅngströmLap Ultimas- Pro final polish lapping film to its online catalogue. Intended for the final step of fibre-optic connector end face polishing, this product is designed to provide scratch-free, defect-free surfaces while producing fibre height to meet Telcordia GR-326 standards.

The new Ultimas-Pro range of films achieves excellent results using only water as a lubricant, thereby offering highest performance at lowest manufacturing cost, the company claims. The abrasive films are coated with precision graded silica on a 75-micron polyethylene terephthalate (PET) base. ÅngströmLap Ultimas-Pro final polishing lapping film comes as a 5-inch disk in packs of 100 disks. A positive fibre height version is available. FOC will be offering demonstrations and samples of ÅngströmLap Ultimas-Pro at OFC 2016 in Anaheim at booth #2308.

AFL launches Fujikura 62S active alignment fusion splicer

AFL has expanded its fusion splicer product line with the Fujikura 62S, an active core alignment splicer designed for exceptional splice loss performance and reduced splice time. With a conventional flip-open wind protector and non-motorised tube heater, the complexity of the splicer is reduced without compromising total cycle time. The auto-start feature for the splicing and tube heating process reduces the number of necessary steps to process splices. This helps to ensure a high level of productivity with the 23-second shrink time using standard splice sleeves. OFS expands microcable product line with MiDia 2GX

Cable maker OFS introduced the latest member of its microcable product line, the MiDia 2GX cable, at the FTTH Conference 2016 in Luxembourg. The new microcable has been designed for ease of installation in the high-density portion of metro networks. Available with fibre counts of 144, 192 and 288, the new microcable allows even greater numbers of fibres to be installed. The MiDia 2GX microcable is a reduced diameter cable that capitalises on OFS’ advances in bend- optimised fibre design to enable tight, low-loss bends without risking fibre strength and long-term reliability. These fibres occupy 36 per cent less area than conventional 250μm coated fibre, enabling smaller diameter cables with a greater number of fibres per tube.

II-VI unveils dual 980nm pump laser with 810mW per port

II‐VI Photonics, a provider of pump laser modules for terrestrial and submarine optical networks, has announced the general availability of its high-power, 2 x 810mW, dual 980nm pump laser module.

The new dual-chip, dual-output, pump laser modules enable designers to replace two laser modules with one. Housed within the compact 10-pin mini-butterfly package, they consume less electrical power, generate less heat and enable significant reductions in the size of high- performance, multi-stage optical amplifier designs.

The new product exploits II-VI’s high-reliability gallium arsenide laser technology platform and wafer fabrication facility in Zurich, Switzerland. Telcordia qualification testing has been completed and production is ramping up to serve several customers, the company says.
