Illuminations Ceramics Greetings Cards Jewellery

Helen White

I work as an Illuminator, using the techniques of gilding found in medieval manuscript decoration, and as a Ceramicist, making tiles, coasters and jewellery.

I studied for a Masters in traditional arts at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London, where I now teach.

Illumination is the use of gold, or other metal, in leaf or powder form. Although I work in two quite different disciplines, they are united in my work by the designs I work with, which are often derived from medieval sources, and the use of gold lustre on ceramics provides a link with the gold leaf illuminations.

My work can be viewed and purchased online. You can also meet me at Mentmore Arts Festival, 23rd to 25th May 2015; Christ Church Art Fair, Waterside, Chesham on 2nd to 3rd May or at most Chesham Local Produce Markets on the 4th Saturday of every month. For more information see my website or please email me at: helenart@btinternet.com.

I am greatly inspired by the beauty and inventiveness of medieval design, which also includes symbolism in the forms used. The principles and practice of geometry inspire and delight me. Medieval craftsmen saw geometry as a reflection of the beauty of Divine order in Creation. Indeed, geometry underpins creation from the tiniest flower (and smaller) to the movement of the planets.

The patterns of traditional art reflect nature and are underpinned by the same geometry that is the basis of the natural world.
