LIFE OF A DAY IN THE SARAH WALKER, SENIOR YOUTH WORKER / TEAM LEADER, JERSEY YOUTH SERVICE

Friday is usually the most action packed day of the week in my role as a youth worker and it is one that is never the same as the last. Working with young people you never quite know what you will be faced with each day, but Friday is particularly busy.

My first job on a Friday is to check my e-mails and complete any administration tasks. The staffing team for the day needs to be checked and confirmed and each session prepared and organised. We have a number of sessions running for young people on a Friday, an afternoon and evening drop in session at our youth project based in Liberation Square, our evening mobile project set up in Millennium Town Park and our street based workers in the St.Helier area.

Once all my office jobs are complete, it’s time for the part I love the most, working with young people. The afternoon starts with some one-to-one support, where sessions differ according to the needs of the individual. The aim is to engage them in some positive activities and conversations and to promote positive behaviour and positive choices. With a quick coffee in between, I then move on to our afternoon session at our youth project in Liberation Square, which is a hive of activity. Young people come here to meet with friends, relax, listen to music and get involved in arts and crafts and cookery. The staff also provide the young people with advice, information and organise interactive activities based on a wide range of issues and topics. It's mostly filled with fun and laughter, where young people discuss things they may not normally discuss openly in a safe environment. But this also brings difficulties as conversations about real life situations you thought only happened in films can be very hard. However knowing that a young person has confided in you for help and support is a testament to the work we do and the relationships we build.
