This year will be an important one for the entire South American region. Investment has been slow on many fronts, but that is now changing, reports Megan Ramsay.

However, the elections that took place in October 2018 are leading many to hope for progress under the new government as confidence gradually returns.


Brazil outlook Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro, took office in January 2019. According to Dominik Keller, head of global development at Switzerland’s Fracht Group, the economic outlook is positive. He explained: “The new elected


government reported [in November 2018] that there will be important port and port terminal privatisations, which will bring a significant increase in activities in the project cargo sector, with the modernisation of those terminals, due to the contracting of cargo handling equipment.” A strong expansion of oil and gas


activities is also expected for the end of 2019 and into the beginning of 2020. In November 2018, Petrobras reported the discovery of a large volume of oil in the Cessão Onerosa pre-salt fields – much more than originally expected. Local reports
