Osborne to address ITT amid Brexit talks

Gary Noakes

FORMER CHANCELLOR of the Exchequer George Osborne will address the ITT’s Conference on Italy’s Amalfi coast midway through Brexit negotiations next June. The securing of ex-PM David

Cameron’s former sidekick as a keynote speaker for the event in Sorrento is a coup for the ITT, which adds the backbench MP to a long list of high-profile politicians it has attracted as speakers. ITT chairman Steven

Freudmann said he had contacted Osborne immediately after he was replaced as chancellor when Theresa May took office, and secured his agreement to speak. “He will be talking about the economy and the progress – or lack of it – that Brexit negotiations have made by next June,” Freudmann said. “It will be interesting

to hear his reflections on Brexit – he was a Remainer, as were so many in the travel industry –

and to hear his views on the expansion of Heathrow, of which he is a big supporter,” Freudmann added. The ITT has secured exclusive use of

the Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotel for the event on June 12-14. Freudmann said more “top line” speakers would be revealed soon. “We have some big- name speakers from the industry too,” he said, adding that 60 of the 400 places available had been sold on the first day of registration and that delegate

registration fees of £485 had been pegged at this year’s level. Companion rates are £285 with all delegates arranging their own flights and transfers. Rates for delegates increase by £100 from January 1. The conference

programme starts on the Monday with a golf tournament and welcome party. Tuesday will feature business sessions, free time in the afternoon and a gala dinner. The final day sees the same format with a farewell party in the evening. ITT is returning to a European destination after this year’s event in Tel Aviv. “We have been to the Middle East, Israel and Barbados and our members felt it was time to have a short-haul destination. This is perfect – Naples is only two and a half hours away from the UK, and 45 minutes from Sorrento,” added Freudmann.

Comment Joanna Kolatsis: ‘It’s easy to see why the industry has been so successful in reinventing itself’

While I am not old enough to remember ITT’s launch 60 years ago, I am delighted to be a current board member and proud to be part of our diamond celebrations this week. ITT’s special birthday also serves as a timely reminder about why we should celebrate the travel industry as a whole. Travel and tourism has changed enormously over the past 60 years – from legacy airlines to low-cost carriers, travel agents to OTAs and huge floating palaces in the shape

of cruise ships. Who would have foreseen these developments 60 years ago? And the great thing is that we aren’t finished yet. There will undoubtedly be

more changes afoot with the new generation of bright young things coming up through the ranks with even more exciting innovations that will continue to make the travel industry great. It’s easy to see why the industry

has been so successful in reinventing itself and continuing to innovate. The strong sense of community

within the sector is evident. As we all know, people “buy” people and there is no better example of this than the travel industry, where networking is at the heart of everything we do. ITT is a great

example of how we help to facilitate the building of member networks through our masterclasses, Odyssey Suppers and Network ITT, to name

but a few. Many a business discussion has begun at these events and is yet another reason to celebrate 60 years – not only of ITT but of an industry that continues to promote and develop its people no matter how old.
