President’s Transitions Where has the year gone? Where did summer go? My year as ARA President is com-

ing to an end. Hard to believe, but that is how fast things change in our industry. One of the highlights of my presidential year was watching on C-Span last December when Congressman Adam Kinzinger spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives about automotive recyclers and the importance of OEM data. ARA and members should be very proud of what happened in Congress. Auto recyclers got a bill passed and signed into law that requires OEMs to make public the part names and descriptions for recalled parts. ARA continues to work with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to now get the rules implemented for this law. I believe that the availability and access- ability of recall and build sheet data are the biggest issues to hinder our industry. We need this information TODAY. With advancements in vehicle technology and equip- ment, we will be hard pressed to keep up with the interchange, and we need this infor- mation to sell the correct part, a safe part, and a part that has not been recalled. Auto recyclers want to be part of the solution on recalls. I have traveled to Washington, D.C., several times this summer for meetings about recalls and build sheet data information. I am there representing the auto recycler and speaking to those in DC that still have no idea what we do. I can tell you this, that your ARA staff has been working 24/7 on these issues and more, for all auto recyclers. I have traveled all over the country to talk about what ARA is doing. I can’t stress enough my appreciation for our staff and the people that work for us. I hope you have visited ARA’s new website, another great accomplishment in the last

year. The website belongs to the members and we welcome your feedback. I know that there are a lot of issues that we still face: illegal operators, salvage pool fees, overregulation, and I will continue to work on all of these issues. I am as frustrat- ed as the next auto recycler. We have OEMs matching our prices, putting out all kinds of advertising disparaging our parts. ARA is working on all of this. I have met some of the greatest people in my travels. When I talked to several past presidents, all of them said, “If you get one thing out of being the ARA President, it will be the people.” Man, they were right. On behalf of myself and Tracy, I want to thank all of you that treated us so great.

I hope to see all of you in Baltimore for the ARA’s 73rd Annual Convention & Expo, October 26th -29th, where I will be passing the gavel to RD Hopper from Arkansas. He is a very good man for the job, with the passion and knowledge to lead ARA. I look for- ward to continuing to help RD and the ARA Executive Committee in any way that I can.

Happy Recycling, Mike Swift
