lubricants to the end user or consumers or OEMs and would be better placed to push a RRBO in the retail market if they feel there is an incentive from a cost or performance or environmental stand point.
The main market nowadays is HDDEO for technology when for Single Technology Matrix (STM) exists and cost of approval is mainly bench testing. It is used for CI4 down to CF-4 mainly with SAE 15W-40. For PCMO low Tier at API SL, when STM exists, it is possible to use RRBO. Moving to higher PCMO tier like EU Main Line or Top Tier would require almost a full program to be run involving engine and bench testing.
The challenge is to have a RRBO with a consistent quality, so my advice to Lubricant companies is to use a RRBO that is known by OEMs and have a critical mass of RRBO that justifies spending money on projects/OEM claims to get product qualified.
While RRBO has found usage in Industrial lubricants, it has not been widely used in Automotive lubricants yet, due to some perceptions about RRBO quality and my submission is that if RRBO companies work closely with lubricant companies, additive companies and OEMs, it will help immensely to change that perception and open a big door for the RRBO industry worldwide. Also with closure of some of the Group I refineries in Europe, the RRBO industry could help Lubricant companies by supplying RRBO of Group I equivalent quality, as I don’t think, the lubricants industry will be able to move 100% to Group II from Group I. Also we should not forget that some RRBO refiners produce RRBO of equivalent Group II virgin base oil quality.
So I am quite optimistic that there are enough opportunities for the RRBO industry even in this soft price environment, if all industry players come forward to work collaboratively. I have no doubt that the future is bright for RRBO!!
