Recycling for waste oils contribute directly to the reduction of crude oil imports from most of the continents, making the EU industry and society less vulnerable to high prices and market volatility. Regeneration of waste lubricating oils is much more efficient compared to conventional crude oil refining processes: Waste lubricating oils contain about 70% base oil which can be recovered. One litre of base oil can also be obtained by the refining of approximately 100 litres of crude oil. Considering the two processes, the re-refining of one barrel of waste oils saves about 70 barrels of crude oil imports. By way of example in Italy, 88% of used oils are re-refined, and 12% are combusted – leading to 1.5 billion € saved over the energy bill for example crude oil imports savings. Estimates indicate that recycling used oils can save up to 10 million barrels of crude oil annually.


In comparison to the primary production of lubricants, recycled waste oils save up to 30 cent of energy in the entire operation.


Recycling targets translate into higher collection rates, which reduce the potentially severe risks for human health and the environment arising from illegal dumping in water or soil or uncontrolled incineration. Illegal dumping of used oils in water could have a serious environmental impact – estimates indicate that 1 gallon of used oil dumped in water can contaminate up to 1 million gallons of clean water.

Now onto the Automotive OEM’s approach towards RRBO. As mentioned in the beginning of this article, OEMs do not treat RRBO differently from any other base oils. Some OEMs are more sensitive than others when facing a new base oil and may require a presentation of the new base oil proposed or will ask for some extra information.


I would think that RRBO in a Factory fill application is still a big challenge however I would expect that some OEMs may be more nervous than others and will need to be made familiar with the base oil first before accepting to use it. However that nervousness would be for any new base oil, even a new virgin base oil. I think that additive companies can play a role to help in introducing new source especially by facilitating contact with OEMs. Emphasise to an OEM depends on the value the RRBO brings in the overall formulation environment from a cost or performance stand point.


However the biggest contribution would come from the Lubricant industry. Lubricant companies are key in promoting
