Adult Acute Facilities

Farnham Road facility melds old and new

PM Devereux Architects has recently completed the design and procurement of a new 60-bed adult acute mental health facility for the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABPT) at its existing site in Farnham Road, Guildford. As senior healthcare director, Mark Carter, reports, a key element of the brief was to provide a service that de-stigmatises those suffering from a mental health illness.

The new Farnham Road Hospital project (The Network – January 2016) was procured under the original P21 framework, with Laing O’Rourke as the Principal Supply Chain Partner; the hospital was a result of a review of mental health service provision across the region, and was originally intended to be one of three new facilities.

The Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS

Foundation Trust has defined its core purpose as follows: • To deliver excellent and responsive assessment, treatment and care, focused on the needs and contributions of the individuals.

• To ‘lead our communities in challenging stigma’.

• To develop its role in improving the mental health and well-being of ‘people living within our communities’.

These principles were used as a base for the Trust to develop its service model in accordance with the direction of national and local policy, defining the following key principles of its service: • Person-centred individualised approaches which enable choice and give back control to service-users.

• Integration between health and social care, community, and inpatient services,

and between different types of inpatient services.

• ‘Mainstreaming’ – ensuring easy access to health and social care services for all people, whatever their intellectual, mental, and physical health.

• Optimising strategic partnerships and joint ventures so services are delivered by those best placed to provide them.

• Changing professional roles in care and treatment delivery, to allow integrated services.

• A ‘whole systems’ approach to organising services so that the key aims above can be achieved effectively.

DEVELOPING THE ESTATES STRATEGY Alongside its Clinical Strategy, the Trust developed its Estates Strategy, reviewing its operations with a view to consolidating its many buildings and services. A series of strategic options were explored for providing inpatient mental health assessment and

treatment for residents of Surrey and North East Hampshire. Following a detailed capacity planning

review, the Trust projected the number of inpatient places required by the new model in the long term. This showed that, for the adult and older adult service, some reductions in the number of inpatient assessment and treatment places were required overall.

THREE KEY SITES

The review identified three key hospital sites where 24-hour inpatient services will be focused – one of which was Farnham Road Hospital. The key drivers behind the proposed changes were: • To modernise services so they are integrated around individual service-user needs and avoid institutional approaches.

• To rationalise services to avoid duplication and ineffective use of resources.

• To meet the requirements of a modern 24-hour treatment and assessment service

The main hospital building to Farnham Road is Grade II listed.

A multi-coloured rainscreen cladding panel system is used to the exterior of the entrance and therapy facilities.
