A ‘welcome evolution’

Tough Furniture has specialised exclusively for over 20 years in designing and making furniture for what it dubs ‘those areas of care where challenging behaviour makes conventional furniture unfit for purpose, poor value through lack of durability, and potentially unsafe’. The company, which has acquired considerable mental healthcare expertise, says that ‘increasingly the requirement in this area is not just for durable furniture, but also for items that reduce self-harm risk, and enhance the aesthetics of the therapeutic environment. It said: “Over the past few years the increasing importance of interior design has been a welcome evolution, and we have invested in the latest CAD software to enable us to create products tailored specifically to service-provider requirements. This year we have purchased new CNC machinery to facilitate curved edging and softer finishes that enhance the overall look of the products and improve safety. A further

External sliding PVCu window

Polar is a privately-owned, independent company, established in 1983, which specialises in the fabrication and installation of commercial aluminium and PVCu windows, doors, curtain walling, and associated architectural ironmongery for the healthcare, education, and commercial sectors.

Over the past eight years, it has developed, tested, and successfully brought to the healthcare market, ‘a unique range’ of reduced ligature windows designed to open and lock in a number of positions. Polar has now further expanded its range of reduced ligature windows for healthcare. Following consultation with a number of NHS Trusts, further in-house development, and extensive testing, it has unveiled the Tweed Secure PVCu window – an external sliding PVCu

window with a turn knob on the inside to operate the external slider, and a fixed mesh inside to allow full security. Polar said: “The Tweed Secure offers client cost benefits where there are no requirements for the extra security that comes with the aluminium options.” Polar can also offer a dual colour version that complements the façade, while maintaining the neutral colour expected inside the room. All windows in the Polar reduced-ligature range ‘offer maximum safety and security, while maximising natural light and providing ventilation as required’.

‘Even faster’ anti-barricade access to bedrooms

In partnership with Primera, Safehinge will launch a wireless Passport access control operation for its SWIFTstop collapsible anti- barricade stop, enabling a staff member to operate the door lock or, in an emergency, release the SWIFTstop doorstop and enter the room instantly with one swipe of their card or fob.

Safehinge said: “The simple, intuitive

Passport system provides almost instant, but secure, access compared with a mechanical key. Service-users can also operate their own

bedroom door lock – but not the SWIFTstop system – a major step in improving dignity and aiding recovery by emulating day-to-day life.” Passport is battery operated, and can be installed cost-effectively in new-builds or existing wards. ‘Unlike a mechanical square drive key system’, the ‘tamper-proof’ system cannot be operated by hand, while if a swipecard or fob is misplaced, it can be deactivated. Philip Ross, Safehinge’s commercial

director, said: “When a staff member makes an observation and identifies that something is wrong, they can immediately release the doorstop with the swipecard and pull the door for entry.”

Safehinge and Primera will jointly present the Passport on a Symphony doorset.

Educating and informing

The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) is a Professional Engineering Institute, and a specialist institute for the healthcare estates sector. Membership development manager, Chris

evolution has been in PU edge banding, which has enhanced waterproofing across the ranges, and increases the longevity of products prone to liquid damage.” Stuart Briscoe, production director, said:

“These machinery investments have enabled us to make another leap forward in creating furniture that is durable and strong, offers long-term value for money, and looks fresh and modern.”

Parker, explained: “The Institute’s members include employees of both public and private healthcare providers, and private sector engineering and consultancy firm and practice employees. Increasingly members come from a non-engineering background, many with FM experience. IHEEM is pleased to be a Supporter of the Design in Mental Health Network, and its conference and exhibition. We will be attending, and look forward to meeting delegates and explaining the membership and CPD opportunities we offer.” IHEEM’s primary purpose, as a professional development organisation, is to keep members up to date with developing technology and changing regulations; various types of membership are available. The Institute provides opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD); all IHEEM-run events are CPD-accredited. Members should undertake CPD as a demonstration of their professional commitment as a matter of course, and IHEEM has an online method of recording of CPD, ‘IHEEM mycareerpath’, available via its website. IHEEM also offers a range of corporate memberships.
