MANAGER Mitie, the facilities management company, has appointed Rachel Webb as Security Assurance Manager for its total security management business (TSM).

Rachel, who has over 15 years’ experience in military and UK Government intelligence roles, will focus on TSM’s risk consultancy offering; bringing with her a wealth of experience in crisis management, strategic intelligence planning and threat assessment and analytics.

Most recently, Rachel managed a European regional command centre for one of Mitie’s largest clients where her key responsibilities were to develop the strategic direction of the intelligence team; oversee specialist training; and coordinate crisis management,

needing a transportable and simple- to-use scrubber dryer.

Normally when I’m running a training session or workshop, the group I’m working with is eager to participate and learn. There are times however when I have one or more people in the group who either intentionally, or not, disrupt the group and the training to the detriment of everyone involved.

You can spot them as soon as they walk in; body language is the first indicator. They slouch into the room, slump in their chair and have a look of abject boredom on their face. Been there, done it, know it all. Generally this person will try to use the day to air their personal grievances about the company, the people or working conditions. Or express their cynicism about the training. If allowed, this person will kill the training session with their negativity.

A couple of ways to handle this is to tell them that what they are referring to is not why we are here today. At the same time, write the words ‘car park’ on a separate flip chart and ‘park’ their issue there for them to take up with the company at a more appropriate time.

There are many other types of disruptors and there are ways to reduce their impact on the session. But the thing that I have learnt is that it is best to set ground rules right at the start and get everyone to agree to them. That way, should problems arise with any of the ‘disruptors’, I can refer to the ground rules, open it up to the group and encourage the group to police their colleague.
