CLEANING

dry in a single pass. Hard floors are safe to walk on in minutes – and clean to a level that’s beyond hand-mopping. Contaminated cleaning solution is propelled into a holding tank by the scrubber dryer’s rotating brushes. Only clean water is applied to the floor.

The volume too is dramatically reduced by the technology in modern machines like the Truvox Multiwash. So there are valuable savings in chemical consumption too.

Brushes are easily interchangeable depending on the cleaning task and the surface. The scrubber dryer is equally able when performing daily maintenance cleaning or intensive scrubbing of a variety of floors.

That includes ‘difficult’ floors such as non-slip safety flooring, low-pile carpets, escalators, travelators and entrance matting, as well as rubber- studded flooring, laminates and tiling. The high-speed counter-rotating brushes of a Mulitwash make it easy to apply the pressure needed to scrub down into grout lines.

Equipped with the right brushes – colour-coded to prevent cross- contamination between say, washrooms and dining areas – scrubber dryers can also clean concrete, terrazzo, marble, slate, stone and composite vinyl surfaces.

The same wide range of hard floors can be maintained also with rotary machines. Here the choice of machine should take account of the relative importance of maintenance and cleaning versus finishing, multiple uses or specialisation, and buffing or burnishing to a high sheen.

“BURNISHING IS NOT

AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO SHIFT HEAVY SOIL AND IMPACTED DIRT.”

Keeping it simple, it mainly comes down to speed. Whereas high-speed rotaries are designed to produce a sparkling finish rapidly, and over large areas, their lower-speed stable-mates can take a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks in their stride.

One factor to bear in mind is that when wet scrubbing (with a clip-on spray unit) a wet-and-dry vacuum will be needed to suck up the used solution. Achieving high speed, productivity and quality of finish requires a powerful motor, and a well-balanced machine that’s comfortable to operate. A centre-wheel aids manoeuvrability and up-to-the-edge burnishing. A rotary like the Orbis UHS 1500 (which has a 1500rpm operating speed and a folding handle for easy storage) also has a floating pad drive that adjusts for uneven floors and a tough vacuum skirt to ensure dust is contained and vacuumed up.

From supermarkets and leisure centres to terminal concourses, or hospitals to food plants, high-speed burnishing is central to an efficient cleaning regime. But burnishing is not an effective way to shift heavy soil and impacted dirt. When aggressive cleaning and renovation of hard floors is called for, rotaries with lower speeds (from less than 200rpm to 400rpm) come into their own. Equipped with the appropriate brushes or pads, the same machine can tackle tasks such as stripping, sanding wood, spraying and scrubbing, as well as buffing up a decent shine.

The versatility does not end there. A bonnet mop sets up a low-speed rotary for carpet shampooing. Other options include turning a standard scrubbing and bonnet mopping 200rpm rotary into a heavy-duty unit, simply by adding a weight kit and switching to an abrasive pad. Or choose a two-speed rotary to master both light cleaning and intensive maintenance.

Whether it’s a scrubber dryer or rotary, battery power is a big plus for daytime cleaning, minimising noise and eliminating trip hazards. In either case, ergonomic design, simple controls, easy brush (and battery) switching, and handy tank removal means the training need is minimal.

A speedy review can only cover some of the ground, so talk to an equipment expert and maybe roll up your sleeves for a demonstration of modern, efficient scrubbing.
