CUBA

What do you think of when you hear the name of Cuba? Fidel Castro and Che Guevara? Huge cigars? Don’t forget the classic 1950s cars with sharp tail-fins and retro paint jobs, or the colourful Spanish- colonial buildings. Remember Gloria Estefan and The Buena Vista Social Club?

Cuba is all of these things, and more! Add powder-fine sandy beaches and rum cocktails; jungly forests and fields of tobacco; the scent of Mariposa flowers on a tropical night. Mixed together, Cuba is an exhilarating cocktail of sights, sounds and smells that has been tricky to access for the last 50 years, but now this fabulous Caribbean island is opening up to the 21st century! This means Cuba is on everyone’s holiday wish list, and we are delighted to offer you the chance to experience the country at an exciting time in its history.

Cuba is by far the largest of the Caribbean islands, sitting 90 miles south of Florida’s Key West and on a similar latitude as Mexico. The island enjoys a tropical climate all year round, and our winter is Cuba’s dry season, making our departure dates the ideal time to visit, with lower humidity and temperatures typically 22-26ºC by day.

Havana is the capital city of Cuba, with a colourful history resulting from a wonderful melting-pot of cultures. It has a unique vibe: you do not have to stroll far to see Cubans going about their daily life – with gusto – singing, arguing, dancing or even watching TV on the streets!

Havana is a port city, protected by a 4km sea wall, the Malecon. One ‘must do’ while you are here is an early evening stroll along it. The beautiful squares and colourful streets of Habana Vieja are UNESCO World Heritage listed, and other city areas have their own appeal, such as the cultural attractions of Vedado and the nightlife in upscale Miramar, where our Havana hotel is set.

150kms east of Havana is the finger-like peninsula of Varadero, its shores fringed with fine sandy beaches to rival any in the Caribbean. This is where the first international hotels have been built and it is a fantastic spot to relax, soak up the sun (and quite possibly some rum) and enjoy the facilities. It is also a great base from which to explore Cuba’s natural environment and other historic towns on day trips that our Host can recommend. Expect fantastic boat trips, tropical ‘jungles’, crumbling towns and colourful wildlife.

“The history and excitement of Havana was full-on and we covered a lot in those 3 days, then it was down to the beach resort where the hotel was well equipped.”
