overdue correspondence is caught up with and she introduces some
scheduling into his workload. Vivaldi now begins each day with a
fresh worksheet, already beautifully laid out for him with clean
paper and ink. He is awe-struck at his own reaction. It always drove
him mad at home when his mother or sisters went into his room to
clean it. Yet Paolina’s presence causes him only pleasure. Not that
they talk much; both are completely preoccupied. But the manner
in which she brings order to his world appeals to him and adds to
his sense of wellbeing. As the day draws to its end there is always
time for a few words, and then she will inquire, with undiminished
interest, about what he is working on; whether he has answered his
letters or begun on the next commission for a new client. He can’t
tell what her feelings for him might be, dare not intrude
emotionally, and makes absolutely no demands upon her. For the
time being her presence is enough; trust will return in its own
time.
And these weeks are no less revelatory for Paolina. There is another
Vivaldi. She has always liked him, even before they knew each
other. Their conversations in the marketplace had been pleasant
enough, but now she discovers a whole new side to him. Working,
he disappears into his own world, becoming completely
unreachable. But the moment he finishes a new piece, he is up and
out of his chair and clamouring for everyone to stop whatever
they may be doing, to pay attention. For they have to listen, and
before they have a chance to compliment him he is busy himself
expounding the virtues and beauty of the work. It can get tiring.
But she has also found in the priest a valuable friend, and
one who has taken the trouble to give new direction to her life
without asking for anything in return. He remains chary of her
feelings and keeps just enough distance, yet asks with unfailingly
sincerity after her welfare and Annina’s. While she remains closed
he is sensitive to her silence, feeling when and on which subjects
she does not wish to speak. Deep inside she prizes his letting her
alone so honourably. For his own part, Vivaldi lets it be known
