Our Story

ABC Fire & Safety Equipment Ltd. Is your one-stop-shop for products and services for Residential, Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional facilities. We specialize in Fire and Safety equipment, First Aid supplies, Fire Alarm Systems, Fire Suppression Systems, and provide Inspections & Installations. “We service everything we sell. We are not just a distributor. We are also bilingual,” says David Jeanson, President of ABC Fire & Safety, which is one of the longest running full service companies of its kind. ABC Fire and Safety was founded in St. Boniface in 1979, and will celebrate its 38th anniversary in 2017. ABC moved from 840 to 800 Marion Street to a new facility with a footprint of 16,000 sq. feet. At the new facility, there is ample room for indoor fire hose testing year-round, a state-of-the-art computerized hydrostatic test system, a clean and repair centre for turnout gear, and more.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Jeanson graduated from Ecole Precieux-Sang. He started working for ABC as a summer job in 1987, renovating their offices and re charging fire extinguishers. When he graduated in 1991, he went full-time as a Service Technician and travelled throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Northwest Ontario inspecting fire suppression systems. In 2005, he purchased the company from Ben Dupuis - an original owner who co-founded the company with Henry Simard in 1979. Since then, the 45 year-old has expanded the company from 13 to 60 employees, and opened additional facilities in Creighton, Saskatchewan, and in Thompson, and Snow Lake, Manitoba. "l worked my way from the bottom up," says Jeanson. In all, ABC staff have over 250 years combined experience in the field. Jeanson's wife, Christine Jeanson, is his Office Manager and Human Resources person. Their son, Dean Rajotte has been with the company for 7 years, and is learning the ropes. The company continues to grow.

ABC sells and services a full range of Fire, Safety, EMS products, and First Aid supplies. It is a single-source for Life/Safety equipment such as, SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus), PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), turnout gear (firefighter clothing), rescue equipment, extrication tools, stabilization equipment, nozzles and firehoses, extinguishers, flashlights and

safety equipment, hearing protection, safety glasses, Automated External Defibrillators (AED's), and more. Two of their major customers are the City of Winnipeg Fire Paramedics Service and Manitoba Hydro, and now includes the PMCR Group. They also provide products and services to approximately 190 of the 232 Volunteer Fire Departments in the Province of Manitoba.

ABC provides and inspects smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and carbon monoxide detectors for apartment and management companies, as well as individual residences. For restaurants, they install and inspect fire suppression systems in kitchens, do exhaust cleaning, sell CO2 for fountain drinks, and beer gas (NO and CO2) for draft beer. ABC also offers training in Portable Fire Extinguishers, Defibrillators, First Aid, and CPR for groups. Training is done in-house, or at the business location, and trainees have included EMS, Fire Departments and offices. CPR training now includes the operation of the AED - Automated External Defibrillator. ABC sells a user- friendly and affordable Philips model used by rural Manitoba Fire Departments. ABC also offers Mobile First Aid vans to stop by on a regular basis and stock up first aid kits in businesses. With increased focus on safety in the home and workplace, Jeanson says, “It is very important to make sure buildings are fire and emergency safe. That means having working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, escape ladders, carbon monoxide detectors, first aid kits, AED’s, and other important equipment that is accessible, and that people know how to use them correctly. It's important to get the proper equipment and training, as it can save someone's life.”

Jeanson refers to a recent example, when a carbon monoxide detector recently alerted a family to high-levels of the dangerous gas in their home, a gas that could have easily proved fatal to the young couple's infant child. "You can't put a price on a human life," says Jeanson. ABC Fire and Safety Equipment Ltd had provided the detector.
