Gifts for
the Techie
By Stephen Riley
There’s one around every corner, in every group of friends and in every family. No, not the friend that always
wants to borrow money or the cousin that always wants to borrow your clothes, but a loved one that’s half human,
half Radio Shack. Every family or group of friends has a member that is bona fide techie.
The techie is the person that has all the latest electronic equipment, more wires than Circuit City looping and hang-
ing throughout their home and the newest cell phone which takes 20 minutes just to access the address book. The best
thing about these lovable, overzealous beings in the family is that come Christmas time, they’re usually the easiest
people to shop for -- as long as you’re up-to-date with the latest gadgets. As we tip-toe the border of the New Year,
there are gadgets upon gadgets to choose from to please your favorite techie.
TRENDS magazine decided to help you out just a little.
Apple iPod Classic
With more people catching public transportation to offset the price of gas, owning an iPod
is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury. The Apple iPod Classic allows your favorite
commuter to hold up to 30,000 of their favorite songs in just 4.9 ounces worth of equipment.
At $250 it's worth it, considering your favorite techie would probably much rather listen to a
playlist than some stranger’s cell phone conversation.
High Definition Televisions
Feb. 17, 2009 will mark the day that analog broadcasts will cease to exist and digital broadcasts go into full swing,
which sadly marks bad news for some. The good news, however, is that prices for HDTVs are at an all-time low. If
you really want to save money.
Garmin Nuvi 5000
Men get lost. Women get lost. Even cab drivers get lost, from time to time. Do you know
someone who’s pride is bruised when they have to ask for directions? Save them the
blow. If your techie doesn’t already have one, get them a unit like the Garmin Nuvi
5000 navigation system, which costs between $286-$800.
Asus Eee PC laptop
For the college student in your family, or the person that’s always on the go, the
Asus Eee PC 904HA goes for around $400, so you’re not breaking the bank to keep
your techie happy and occupied.
