her arrival at Cataraqui.
In defence of her title she won as a fourteen year old
last year, when she became the youngest winner of
the tournament, James got off to a comfortable start in
the field day and cruised through the matches to the
final. In her semi-final match she had to grapple with
fellow junior golfer, the sweet swinging Christina Thorne,
a match she won by a score of just 2&1.
In the other semi-final Adrienne MacLean, a former Stanford golfer and the wife of NHL player John
MacLean, faced off against Danielle Greene of Gananoque. The 22 year old Greene prevailed, setting
up a replay of last year’s final.
The match was set for seventeen holes as Cataraqui currently has their seventeenth hole out of play for
the addition of a new pond in front of the green and it took every hole to complete the final.
Through eight holes Greene, a student at the University of Toronto, lead James by two holes and looked
to be strong heading into the back nine. Her lead was not to last however, as James won the ninth hole
and also the thirteenth. The latter after Greene hit an errant shot and conceded the hole.
Tied up as they played the final hole, the close battle was decided on the green. Greene had missed the
surface and her birdie chip ran well past the hole. James’ approach rolled up to within two feet of the hole
and that left her with a short par putt to stew on as Greene lined up her par save.
When Greene’s putt rolled past the hole there was nothing left to separate Augusta from her second
consecutive victory but a short putt which she converted handily.
