The Terrible “Toos”
Too Many, Too Fast & Too Big
When I was approached to put together an article discussing the Top 5 most common
errors I see on the lesson tee, my first reaction was, “How do I ever narrow it down to
just 5?” However, because I strive to write in the same manner in which I teach;
helping each student to understand the “why does this happen?” and not just the
“what just happened?” my list was whittled down to just 3. Three “2”’s… Too Many,
Too Fast, Too Big.
Too Many Moves.
One of the first questions I ask my students when they come
for a lesson is “What are you hoping your return will be on
your investment in me?” Nine times out of ten, the answer is
consistency. If our goal is to be consistent – that is by my own
definition – to build a reliable, repeatable swing motion that
provides decent results – than it only makes sense that the
least moving parts we have, the easier it is going to be to
coordinate them all together. I see so many swings where
there is just way too much stuff going on and unless you
have an endless amount of time to perfect it; you will never
develop the consistency you strive to gain.
In the simplest of terms, the golf swing is a turn behind the
ball and a turn back to the ball through to your target. I really
try to get my students to focus on making these moves with
their big muscles – the strong ones – shoulders and hips.
Shoulders for the turn behind the ball, hips for the turn back
to the ball and through to the target. This really helps to take
the focus off the hands and arms (not to say a good grip and
arm positioning/extension is not imperative to a good golf
move) and produces the maximum amount of power with

the least amount of effort.
you return back to the golf ball and through to your target. Keying on their motion in the
through-swing takes your focus off your hands and arms for maximum power.
