There are a lot of things you hear when you play golf. Nothing is more
common than the bad advice about the golf swing that has turned into a
Cliché. Unfortunately a lot of these Clichés can do nothing but harm
your ability to play the game well. Lets have a look at one of the most
common Clichés.
Cliché
“Keep your head down”
I hear this all the time and “you lifted your head” more than any other
piece of well meaning but ill-informed advice. This causes you to drop
your chin to your chest at address, which keeps you from making a
good shoulder turn. Now you are completely moving your centre.
The Fix
“Keep a steady head”
Focus on keeping your head stable not “down”. Bring your shoulder
under your chin, over the ball, without moving your head. Also
remember to leave both feet on the ground on your back swing; it will
prevent you from moving up and down.
PS: For all of you who wear glasses (bi-focal or progressive lens)
beware of your head position. You might be able to see the ball clearly
with your head being down, but not necessarily in a good position to
make a great golf swing.
tip
Above: Keep your head stable, not “down” to allow for a
proper shoulder turn and better contact.
Left: Trying to keep your head “down” leads to a lot of swing
faults inclduing poor contact and a loss of power.
