>> PROSTATE CANCER RESEARCH TOURNAMENT
10th Annual Prostate Cancer
Research Tournament Best Ever
For everyone involved it is hard to believe a decade has passed since the Annual
Prostate Cancer Research Tournament hosted by the Brockville Highland Golf Club
kicked off. It was Highland owner Charlie Guy who suggested the tournament and
donated the course for the day of play. Guy himself was a prostate cancer survivor.
When you wade into the middle of the event today, it is astounding at what has been
accomplished in that short time.
“We are just amazed at the support of the community,” said Cathy Thomas, one of
twelve members of the tournament committee. “The support we had from people aged
10 all the way to 90 was unreal. To have an eleven year old carrying clubs and then
a ninety year old volunteer passing out hot dogs is something to see.” More than 90
volunteers help the tournament run smoothly, a huge task considering there are more
than 240 golfers and some 300 people attending the dinner.
That community support has been evident from the very start for this event which
has now raised more than $469,000 including $84,000 this year alone. The funds are
split equally between the Cancer Centres in Ottawa and Kingston.
The day is fun-filled one emphasizing family, community and awareness of Prostate
Cancer and health issues. It is supported by 13 major corporate sponsors and nearly 200
other sponsors who do everything from donate prizes to buy advertising on the tee signs.
Highlights of the day included a golf ball drop where the spheres are hoisted up to 100
feet and released down to a golf hole. 2400 golf balls were dropped, representing $3800
in revenue, and ten found the hole resulting in a prize of $190 for each golf ball “owner.”
They even had a long drive competition with a twist. Irv Amyotte hit a marshmallow forty-
four yards and won a Bag Boy Golf Bag donated by Flagstick Golf Magazine.
