McGee Repeats At City & District
Al McGee of the Hautes Plaines Golf Club repeated as the champion of the OVGA City
& District A Class Championship on August 20th. A final round of 74 at The Royal Ottawa
GC was enough to drive him clear of his pursuers.
Heading into the final day McGee was pushed in his defence of the title he won for the
first time in 2007. He was tied with close friend and club-mate Chris Bernard at a score
of 144 and young Steven Knapp of Rideau View was just one stroke back.
It looked to be a set-up for a classic showdown on a venerable layout but, initially at
least, it was the golf course that proved to have the upper hand in shaping the outcome
of the competition. Through the opening holes Knapp and Bernard struggled and while
McGee was over par himself early on, he was content with the start. “I was quite happy,
really. I was one over par but I wasn’t losing any strokes,” he remarked.
The start by his closest pursuers did have some affect on McGee, at least as far as his
strategy was concerned. “I sort of got into a match play mode, knowing what they were
doing. I was starting to pay attention to their games instead of my own. I tried to get out
of it but nobody was doing anything.”

By deep into the back nine McGee had a developed a lead but it was not a comfortable

made McGee quite happy. “It’s fantastic to beat a great player like Chris Bernard and

to have my buddy Kyle Koski beat me at the Citizen (the Ottawa Citizen Amateur
