As a young teen passionate about golf and known to devour a book or two in my time, I was quick Editorial Assistant
Joe McLeanto snap up any volume about the subject. First, like any developing golfer, I lapped up the
instruction books. It didn’t matter who it was written by - top touring professional, unknown writer,
or renowned teacher – I absorbed it as fast as I could. Then spent days frustrating myself on the
Magazine Design/Layout
driving range. Soon I was on to biographies, course profiles, and eventually I found the books
Flagstick Consulting & Design
that would appeal to me the most – those that outlined the history of the great game we play.

in the region but occasionally we get to wander down memory lane as well. It may not be the most
exciting read for everyone but it is amazing the response we get to stories like “A Century of Golf”, CPGA Staff Instructors
Kevin Haime, Gord Percy,
a feature that we ran back in 2000 that outlined a hundred years of golf in the region.

It was while researching that story that I first saw reference to the McKellar Park Golf Club. In past
Advertising Sales
editions of Ottawa newspapers there were various mentions of the club but the fleeting glimpses
Jeff Bauder - Sales Manager
jbauder@flagstick.comdidn’t really tell the whole story.
Chris Meechan - Regional
Flash forward to 2006 and in one of our editorial meetings the subject of McKellar Park was
brought up with the thought of a future feature. Two years of research, many meetings, and with
the help of a lot of people, the intrepid Joe McLean was able to piece together the tale of McKellar.

In this issue it comes to light in entirety for its first time. It’s a compelling story, and whether you are
Advertisingfamiliar with the club or not, as a golfer I think you will appreciate the account.
Like the McKellar Park Golf Club, the balance of the 2008 golf season is behind us. There is still
some time left to play (and like I said in this space last month it is still the BEST time to play golf) but
for Flagstick this will be our final print issue of the year. The magazine itself will be back in the spring Flagstick Golf Magazine is published 7 times annu-

I didn’t plan to spend a lot of time on this column doing a retrospective of the year and I won’t. 2009
