have been the grateful recipients of several very interesting donations mostly relating to Lang Propellers and Stanley Thorn, Chief Inspector for Lang. Readers may remember that we reported the first donation of two Locke King-related portraits, a Lang propeller and propeller stamps back in the September 2015 Bulletin. Since then we have received many more wonderful photo- graphs showing the propeller workshops at Lang, along with documents relating to Stanley’s work

and his drawing instruments. The most recent donation also contained numerous photos relating to motorcycle racing at Brooklands and a motorcycle tuning garage run by May Thorn, Stanley’s wife. Research is ongoing into the photographs and the story behind them and we hope to uncover the full picture soon. We are extremely grateful to Rob and Virginia for such a rich record of both racing and aviation at Brooklands with a distinctly personal edge. Abigail Wilson

Update

‘Nimrod’ acting as team haulier (Keith Barry).

he weather was practically perfect for Car Rides during the October half-term, with a nice ambient temperature in the main, and dry. It wasn’t ‘beach’ or ‘inside’ weather and we cleaned up accordingly. Visitor numbers may have been a little lower because of all the movements and development on site but our conversion rate (visitors to rides) was outstanding and we ended with an all-time donation record for the week.

That was helped by an injection of new people to the team, which allowed us to field six cars at one point. Amazingly nothing broke badly and everyone played nicely together, even with a wedding and a photo-shoot taking place during one of our days. ‘Nimrod’ (our workshop-built car, named after a late colleague) replete with a new trailer, courtesy of ‘Team Boss’ Graham Appleyard, made its début as the team haulier and storage depot of the team’s circuit equipment. This ‘racy’ car also provided a place for visitors to leave some of their bags and coats while they were being taken around. On Friday, as Halloween loomed, visitors were buying tickets from and being loaded into the cars by witches, with the odd devil driver... who says we can’t entertain in style!
