1951 OSCA V12, ex-Prince Bira

e are very grateful to Peter Weunsch for the loan of his 1951 OSCA V12. Driven by Prince Bira of Siam, it won its début race at the 1951 Goodwood Easter Meeting. Unfortunately it failed to live up to its early promise and retired on the first lap of the 1951 Spanish Grand Prix, its only World Championship appearance. Bira created the car by having his Maserati 4CLT upgraded with an OSCA V12 engine and body. It retains its Maserati 4CLT chassis and gearbox but has a distinctive revised nose and exhausts on both sides. The car still runs and has been taking part in events across the UK. It is particularly exciting to have two of Bira’s cars at Brooklands until next spring (Bira’s MG K3 was mentioned in the last edition of the Bulletin) so come and see them while they’re here!

W 1904 Humber motorcycle

We are very pleased to welcome Bill Whiteley’s 1904 Humber motorcycle on loan. This machine illustrates an important stage in the development from bicycle to motorcycle, incorporating several newly-patented innovations. It was raced at Canning Town in one of the earliest motor bicycle races, representing a link between banked velodromes and banked motor racing tracks like Brooklands. Our thanks to Bill for its loan.

André Hartford shock absorber

outside the bounds of the Track. Thanks to the efforts of Roger Bird we were able to identify it as an André Hartford shock absorber. Interestingly there was a Hartford works within the Track and the location of the find was close to where the bridge over the Byfleet Banking came down out- side the Track, which would have been the way in and out for the Hartford works. Many thanks to Michael for his subsequent donation of the shock absorber, which helps to tell the story of one of the businesses with a base at Brooklands.

Items relating to Stanley Thorn and Lang Propellers

Many thanks to Rob Sewell and Virginia Spiers for an amazing collection of photographs and artefacts. For the past year and a half or so we
