under the Jupiter umbrella, has undergone an extensive refurbishment, transforming the grade II listed four-star Georgian country house hotel. Te renovation includes a transformation of all public spaces, including the restaurant & bar, lounge and reception areas. Interior designer Helen Hooper of House

& Hotel Interiors, who has previously worked with Jupiter Hotels on renovation projects across the UK, managed the project. Helen explained, “We wanted to give the hotel a new look, which was influenced by the hotel’s exquisite countryside setting and deliver locally inspired touches throughout, which lie at the heart of the design concept. Te new interior fuses contemporary fabrics and colours with traditional, period features and detail, epitomising nostalgic elegance with a modern day style”. All Mercure hotels are known for their

intention to connect with their locality, endeavoring to provide guests with a ‘sense of place’. Helen Hooper was keen that the connections should be subtle enough for guests to ‘stumble across’ them without them being too blatant or obvious. “We had fun creating the narrative for this hotel. Tere is plenty of history around Gloucester and in the building itself - it was once used as a school for naughty girls so we toyed with the idea of incorporating St. Trinian’s in some way - but whilst we have included elements of ‘local’ in the art, we decided it was most suited to take the property back to its origins and recreate what was once a beautiful country house. To make it feel less like a hotel”. Tis has been achieved by using heritage

paints for the walls, ceilings and doors, adding individual pieces of signature furniture and providing different styles of leather and velvet chairs, a marble bar and marble coffee tables to convey luxurious elegance. Pastel

tones are used throughout and a bespoke distinctly non-hotel dappled carpet in light grey and blue was designed specifically to give the interiors a sense of being privately owned and not as a commercial project. Te carpet pattern is designed to look like water and was inspired by the stunning lake at the bottom of the hotel’s sprawling grounds. With the addition of some stand-out pieces of art and sculpture Hooper and her team have delivered a hotel that promotes serenity and calm. Most importantly, they have done so working within a limited budget - even though many of the art pieces look particularly expensive. Tere’s the Beatrix Potter Tailor of Gloucester story printed within the gold ‘M’ wall; a Gloucestershire inspired ‘black pig table’ complete with spots and a country forest mural; all of which enhance the hotel’s local heritage and picturesque countryside backdrop. Te hotel is ideally located in the Cotswolds country village of Upton St Leonards, just three miles from Gloucester city centre. Te hotel is set in extensive grounds showcasing exquisite landscaped garden views. Emma Kewley, Interior Designer at House

& Hotel Interiors, worked alongside Helen on the project. Emma comments, “Tere’s an array of unique design features, which draw inspiration from the hotel’s beautiful countryside surroundings. We’ve added contemporary and bespoke artwork throughout with a butterfly cello, a copper wire bird

migration, and boxed pictures, which contain maps of Gloucester, to enhance the hotel’s rural English heritage. Bespoke chandeliers and gold leaf lighting was added to deliver a sense of grandeur throughout.” For a mid-scale hotel brand the Mercure

Bowden Hall Hotel has a distinctly high end feel.

concluded: “Te investment demonstrates our continued commitment to the growth and transformation of our portfolio in the UK. Te renovation of Bowden Hall Hotel provides a taste of what’s to come over the next year as we increase hotel development and elevate customer experience in the mid-scale sector.” Mercure Gloucester, Bowden Hall Hotel, Bondend Lane, Upton St Leonards, Gloucester.
