The SEE prize this yearwas awarded to the Engineering Council registrantwho had attained the highest score in their Professional ReviewInterview(PRI) in 2015 through the SEE. Thewinnerwas James Preston CEng,who

is amember of the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr), one of the Professional Affiliates withwhomSEE has a Joint Registration agreement. SEE President, Peter Vincent, and Past

President, ProfMervyn de Calcina-Goff, made the presentation at the ICorrMidland Branch event and AGMon the 30th November in themagnificentMain Chamber of Birmingham’s city council in Council House. The presentation consisted of an engravedmedal togetherwith a cheque for £250 and a certificate. The award also carries HonoraryMembership of the SEE (Hon.MSEE) for 3 years. James Preston isManaging Director and

proprietor of Corrosion Prevention, a specialist engineering consultancywith expertise in corrosion prevention systems and the provision of technical services and systemdesigns for the the cathodic protection industry. The company’s customers include local

authorities, housing associations, engineering consultants, engineering contractors,material providers and overseas engineering companies. Work undertaken includes corrosion

assessment and investigation, specialist surveys, recommendations for repair and corrosion prevention, design and provision

of technical services for cathodic protection systems, commissioning of systems, documentation of systems, routine operation andmonitoring of cathodic protection systems, fault finding, system reviewand rectification of systems. Projects vary fromsmall structures

(buried foundations and flood defence gates, for example) to structures of national significance (such as the LNG import terminals at South Hook and Isle of Grain, major highway structures andmajor ports, including Felixstowe, Dover and London Gateway).

James is certificated by ICorr as a Level 3

cathodic protection engineer in accordance with BS EN 15257 in the fields of reinforced concrete, buried structures andmarine structures. As Managing Director he is responsible

for all aspects of the performance of the company, including health and safety, marketing, tendering for projects, representing the company within professional associations, financial planning, payments, approval of design work, technical reports and project delivery.


Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is understood acrossmost professions as the systematic acquisition of knowledge and skills, and the development of personal qualities, tomaintain and enhance professional competence. Much has beenwritten and debated

about the implementation of formal CPD procedures for Professional Engineers. In commonwith the other LicensedMembers of the Engineering Council, the SEEwill be implementing a CPDmonitoring process starting in 2017. A proportion of the SEE registrants

(including those fromthe JointMember Institutions)will be chosen at randomand invited to submit their CPD records for the past year. These recordswill then be peer- reviewed by The Society. Once the procedure has been validated the CPD samplingwill become an annual event. The only criterion for a CPD submission is

that it demonstrates an appropriate commitment tomaintaining and enhancing competence on the part of the individual. The Engineering Council CPD policy

statement states that learning through CPD should be reflective and relate to specific

objectives, even if these are only to maintain professional engineering competence. A satisfactory CPD record is one that:

 demonstrates depth and breadth of CPD appropriate to the individual’s professional practice;  demonstrates relation of recorded activity to specific objectives; and  demonstrates reflection – that is the evaluation of the CPD undertaken against objectives.
