- NOT ONLY REDUCES THEIR COSTS BUT DEMONSTRATES ‘ECO-RESPONSIBILITY’

Around 11,000 solar panels and 14 wind turbines have been generating power at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team's 13-year-old ‘Go Green’

eco-campaign also

includes reduced water and electrical use, recycled paper products for all tissues, conversion of cooking oil into biodiesel fuel, a digital version of the cheerleaders calendar to spare trees. There is even compostable packaging for the hot dogs and Philly cheese steaks.

Signs in the toilets at Lincoln Financial read: "Recycle your beer here and your plastics outside." A sign at the stadium says: "The only water we waste is sweat."

All of the 126 pro teams in the five major sports use renewable energy to reduce

energy waste. Deploying technology such as easy-to- install solar panels, wind turbines and waste water recycling units makes sound economic sense. Today’s sports grounds maintain a wide variety of serious energy-efficiency programs. All have active recycling and composting schemes and around 90% of the current pro venues now have certified ‘green’ LEED buildings. The 49ers' famous stadium currently has a LEED certification.

NRG Energy, based in Princeton, N.J., has been

at NFL stadiums with the Eagles, Washington Redskins, New England Patriots and New York Jets/New York Giants (both at the MetLife Stadium).

NRG also has partnered with the 49ers. You won’t be surprised to hear that NRG owns the panels and wind turbines at Lincoln Financial and has invested in their installation.

In turn, the Eagles signed a 20-year contract to buy all their electrical power from NRG.

Even NASCAR has a program - NASCAR Green. Its site even uses fuel designed to reduce carbon emissions. The Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania is now served by 40,000 solar panels. At NASCAR's 2.5 mile-long

NASCAR runs an energy program called ‘Nascar Green’

Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, the site is powered by a 3MW solar farm located nearby. Power is also fed to the local grid providing electricity for the 1,000 nearby households.
