CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN SCIENCE


What is the programme about?


This programme provides a grounding in the processes employed in the construction sector. Upon completion, it provides the graduate with the competencies to enter employment at technician level and also provides an ideal platform for progression to further study. This is a unique programme with up to 60% of timetabled hours devoted to "hands-on" practical activities in state of the art industrial type workshops.


Following an induction period at the start of year one, students will select one of the following specialisms:


a) Wood Technology b) Masonry c) Plasterwork


Site Practice and Workshop Practice for the chosen specialism are then studied over the two years. Who is the programme suited to?


This programme will appeal to those interested in taking a “hands-on” approach to learning through practical activities.


Modules Year 1: Construction Methodology 1, Construction Mathematics, Drafting with CAD 1 and BIM, Construction I.T.1, Site Practice 1 (Wood Technology), Workshop Practice 1 (Wood Technology), Site Practice 1 (Masonry), Workshop Practice 1 (Masonry), Site Practice 1 (Plasterwork), Workshop Practice 1 (Plasterwork). Note: Students will be offered one of three elective sets on entry, ie, wood based, masonry based or plastering based. There are two modules per set. All electives sets may not be offered on entry at stage 1.


Year 2: Construction Methodology 2, Sustainable Building Services 1, IT and BIM 2, Land Surveying, Site Practice 2 (Wood Technology), Workshop Practice 2 (Wood Technology), Site Practice 2 (Masonry), Workshop Practice 2 (Masonry), Site Practice 2 (Plasterwork), Workshop Practice 2 (Plasterwork). Note: Students will normally continue in the elective set attended in stage 1.


What can I do after the programme?


Construction Technicians are involved at every stage of the construction process from the planning stages through to the final completion, these include newly built projects and the maintenance and refurbishment of existing structures incorporating Heritage and Conservation work.


Graduate Technicians may perform a role of assistant in a range of disciplines including Assistant Trades Foreman, Assistant General Foreman, Assistant Site Agent, Trainee Site Engineer.


Graduates can also progress to Level 7 and Level 8 programmes at LIT.

Minimum Entry Requirements: Leaving Certificate (2017): A minimum of 5 Passes (O6/H7) in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish. Foundation Level Mathematics at grade F2 or higher is acceptable as meeting the Mathematics requirement for this programme.
