Energy and especially Electrical Energy is needed for everything we do in today’s world. But energy prices are rising because oil and gas are getting harder to find. Climate change is real and caused by burning fossil fuels. So we need new ways to produce energy and we need to make smarter use of the energy we have. The EU and Ireland have set very ambitious targets for renewable energy and energy efficiency. Meeting these targets will need huge investment in energy production, distribution, monitoring and control systems. This will create jobs for people with the right skills.


This course covers all the technologies needed to produce energy and in particular electrical energy, from renewable sources, to monitor and control energy systems and to connect them to the electricity grid. It is a mixture of theory and practical hands-on learning in all aspects of Renewable Energy Technology, electrical technology and automated monitoring and control systems. The skills learned on the programme can be used in a wide range of industries and good graduates are in high demand.


The 3 year Level 7 ordinary degree leads into the 1 year add-on Level 8 honours degree in Sustainable Electrical Power Systems. Direct entry into Year 2 is possible into for suitably qualified Phase 6 Electricians.

Anyone interested in a career in the expanding renewable energy, energy efficiency, electrical or control systems sectors and will offer a wide range of career opportunities to graduates.

Year 1: Energy Systems, Electronics, Electrical Technology, Electrical Workshop, Engineering Science, Mathematics, Technical Communications.


Year 2: Renewable Energy Technology 1, Electrical Technology 2, Electrical Workshop 2, Mathematics, Instrumentation and Control, Energy Transfer Systems, Electrical & Instrumentation Drawing.


Year 3: Semester 1: Renewable Energy Technology 2, Electrical Machines, PLC Systems and Applications, Power Conversion Systems, Project Management, Project.


Semester 2: Renewable Energy Technology 3, Distributed Electrical Systems, Plant Information Systems, Energy Efficiency in Industry, Data Analysis & Statistics, Project


What can I do after the programme?


Given the varied nature of the programme, it opens up a wide range of job opportunities not just in the installation and maintenance of Renewable Energy systems but also in electrical and control systems and energy efficiency and management.


Graduates of the programme can also progress to a Level 8 honours degree in Sustainable Electrical Power Systems at LIT. Graduates have been employed by Eirgrid, ESB International, Enercon, Kingspan Renewables, Vestas, Siemens, Rockwell Automation and many others.

Minimum Entry Requirements: Leaving Certificate (2017): A minimum of 5 O6/H7 grades in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish. Although not a requirement, it is recommended that applicants achieve a minimum of an O5 grade in Mathematics due to the mathematics content of this programme.
