MCG Youth & Arts students and staff visit Yellowstone to focus learning on the natural environment.

MCG YOUTH & ARTS REVISITS YELLOWSTONE In partnership with Park Journeys,

Inc., a select group of MCG Youth & Arts staff and students visited Yellowstone National Park. The latest trip was the third in a series of excursions that began in 2012, and now six staff members and more than 30 Pittsburgh-area high-school students have had the opportunity to experience one of our nation’s greatest natural treasures. Park Journeys, Inc. has developed

a multi-dimensional program that not only includes travel, hiking, and nature, but focuses on team-building and civic causes, as well. During the five-day visit, staff and students explore nature, and learn about geology, wildlife, and conservation.

The trip is also photodocumented, which creates numerous teachable moments for MCG Youth & Arts teaching artists. Upon returning, MCG Youth & Arts students have exhibited their photography, and this year will be no different. Their work will be on display September 23, 2016 through January 13, 2017, with a public reception on September 23rd at the Susan Zubik Welcome Center at Catholic Charities, 212 Ninth Street in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh (in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Downtown Gallery Crawl). “I am a relatively new Women of Visions member, but I have exhibited with them in past years. It’s very exciting to be a member during this celebratory time. W.O.V. has been in existence for 35 years showcasing thought- provoking, empowering and courageous bodies of work on the subject of black people and the African diaspora. Exhibiting with such a dynamic group of women has inspired me to create more conscious artwork.”

–Richena Brockinson, Women of Visions member and MCG Youth & Arts teaching artist
