FALL 2016 NEWSLETTER Hard Work Pays Off For Hope CommUnity Center

For the Second Time, Grant Funds Citizenship Education

Hope CommUnity Center is excited to have been selected as one of 36 organizations nationally to receive the Citizenship Instruction and Naturalization Application Services Grant from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). HCC first received this grant in Fiscal Year 2014 and had the opportunity to apply again for a two- year grant period starting in October 2016. HCC was selected to receive $250,000 over the two-year period to be utilized in partnership with Catholic Charities of Central Florida (CCCF).

Pathways to Citizenship and Civic Engagement

Through the grant, the Immigration Program at HCC intends to provide citizenship instruction through their Pathways to Citizenship Program to more than 400 legal permanent residents (LPRs) while CCCF will provide naturalization services to more than 450 LPRs. HCC will provide history, geography,

and civics instruction in English; conduct mock interviews; and utilize technology to prepare students for their naturalization interview and exam. Furthermore, the classes will include an emphasis on civic engagement, which encourages students to become active citizens upon naturalizing.

Students from Across the World

The USCIS grant comes after two very successful years where HCC served over 500 students from 34 countries of origin. During that two year period over 100 of HCC’s Pathways to Citizenship students successfully naturalized to become US Citizens and many more are well on their way.

Thank You USCIS

All of us at HCC are grateful for this partnership and excited to be able to offer more opportunities for low- literacy residents to work towards United States Citizenship.

Thank You!
