More Power to them!

Power Clan Gathering happening in Waterford this month

f you are anywhere is the county of Waterford the chances are that you

are in the vicinity of at least one Power! The name Power is one of the top 20 most popular names in Ireland but in Waterford those odds are far higher.

The name originally came to

Ireland following the Norman Conquest and was originally Le Poer, before being gaelicized to De Paor and then anglicised to Power. There are 2 possible meanings of the name. One possibility is that it means a native of Pois, a town in Picardy. The other is that is translates as Poor or Pauper. Later this month even more Powers are expected to descend

on Waterford for the annual Power Clan Gathering which runs from the 27th-30th August. Powers from all over the world will gather in Waterford and will take in tours of Dunhill, Dungarvan and of course Curraghmore House. Curraghmore House, near Kilmacthomas is long associated with the name. In the 18th century, James Power, Earl of Tyrone, rebuilt the house and laid out gardens on a scale to match Versailles. The 8th Marquis of Waterford still lives in Curraghmore House, a treasure trove of Power family history.
