Important information Water safety - Legionella

Legionella is a bacteria found in water. It is very rare, but in large numbers it can cause illnesses such as Legionnaires’ disease. The symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease are similar to the flu and include high temperature, cough, muscle pain, headaches, pneumonia and very occasionally, diarrhoea and mental confusion.

As your landlord, we have a duty to undertake water hygiene risk assessments to ensure that water systems are safe within our properties. Boston Mayflower has a rolling programme in place to carry out these risk assessments. We will write to you when your property is due for its risk assessment to arrange a convenient appointment. The check takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Remember to always ask to see identification before letting someone in to your home.

What can you do?

1. If you have been away for a week or more, run your taps and shower heads for at least two minutes to flush through the water. If you have a bathroom that is rarely used, run the water through all the taps (including the sink, bath, shower and toilet) on a weekly basis or before somebody uses the room.

2. During your heating service visit, Aaron Services will adjust your hot water temperature to 60˚C. Do not adjust this - it is the temperature the hot water must reach to kill Legionella.

3. Regularly use, clean and disinfect all taps, toilets, shower heads and hoses. 4. Do not remove any lids or insulation on any water storage tanks within the property.
