Deutschland in Chicago

City Ventures will lead us on a tour to rediscover the cultural contributions made by German immigrants to Chicago. We’ll visit the Romanesque-style St. Michael Church with its clock tower, magnificent spire, 8-foot statue of St. Michael, side altars, and exquisite stained glass windows, which was a center of the German community until the early 1900s. We’ll also stop at Dinkel’s Bakery where you can purchase your own edible souvenirs from the fourth generation of Dinkels. Next is a stop at the Dank Haus German Cultural Center with art, artifacts and memorabilia reflecting on Chicago’s German community over the years. Our step-on guide will will talk about more than brats and breweries, including the Germania Club, as we drive through former German neighborhoods. We’ll stop at Chicago Brau Haus for our included lunch (preorder on registration form) with choices of Weiner Schnitzel or Sauerbraten, served with salad, dessert, and a non- alcoholic beverage

Pioneers (55+)

King Charles III

Put on your tweeds and get in the mood for a delightful British experience at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. We’ll see Mike Bartlett’s “futuristic historical” play, King Charles II. After a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne with Camilla by his side. As William, Kate, and Harry look on, Charles prepares for the future of power that lies before him. But how to rule? This drama of political intrigue explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of Britain’s democracy, and the conscience of its most famous family. The piece is written in blank verse, a tradition for plays about British royals, and is up-to-date and witty. Our outing will include lunch at Elephant & Castle, a British Pub. (Reg. by 9/15).
